Newport & Coastal Rhode Island Brewery Weekend

A weekend brewery route from Exeter to Newport: Tilted Barn's farm taproom, Ragged Island's working farm in Portsmouth, Newport Craft's expanded distilling campus, and two Middletown stops near Newport's beaches — with Ocean Drive, Cliff Walk, and Bowen's Wharf along the way.

Rhode Island packs a genuinely varied brewery scene into a small footprint, and this route strings together five of its best stops on a line running from inland Exeter out to the Newport coast. Start at Tilted Barn, the state’s original farm brewery, then head toward the water: Ragged Island’s working farm in Portsmouth, Newport Craft’s newly expanded brewing-and-distilling campus in Newport itself, and two very different Middletown taprooms — Rejects near the beach and Taproot inside a working vineyard. Budget a full weekend, and leave room for Ocean Drive, the Cliff Walk, and a seafood dinner at Bowen’s Wharf.

Exeter: Tilted Barn Brewery

The route starts inland, at the brewery that started Rhode Island’s farm-brewery movement in the first place. Tilted Barn was established in 2014[1]and is officially recognized as the state’s first farm brewery. Before the brewery existed at all, its founders had already built Ocean State Hopsin 2007, Rhode Island’s first commercial hop farm[2] — so the agricultural roots here go back further than the beer does.

The taproom occupies a custom 10,000-square-foot post-and-beam barn, with a mezzanine that looks down over a 30-barrel brewhouse. The beer itself has built a strong regional following, particularly the New England IPAs and farmhouse ales, and the setting alone makes it worth starting the weekend here before the coastal legs of the trip.

Portsmouth: Ragged Island Brewing Company

From Exeter, head east toward Aquidneck Island. Ragged Island sits on a 37-acre working farm[3] in Portsmouth, one of the more genuinely scenic brewery settings in the state.

The current location integrates hop fields and walking trails around an 1890s farmhouse, with an onsite greenhouse and outdoor decks adding to the farm-to-glass atmosphere. An extensive 16-tap lineup[4] gives you plenty to work through, and it's an easy, unhurried stop before pushing on toward Newport.

Newport: Newport Craft Brewing & Distilling

Newport itself is the anchor of the weekend, and Newport Craft is the anchor of Newport. Founded in 1999,[5] it's also home to Thomas Tew Rum, making it the first licensed distillery to operate in Rhode Island in over 135 years.[6]

A major facility overhaul reopened in April 2024, expanding total capacity to 100,000 barrels annually,[7]and giving the campus a seasonal rooftop patio with views of the Newport Pell Bridge, alongside a separate outdoor lawn with a pop-up bar and standard indoor seating. It's a good stop to linger at before heading into town for Ocean Drive, the Cliff Walk, or dinner at Bowen’s Wharf.

Middletown: Rejects Beer Co. & Taproot Brewing Co.

Just north of Newport proper, Middletown holds two breweries with almost nothing in common besides the town line — a beach-adjacent taproom and a vineyard estate.

Rejects Beer Co.

Rejects leans into a self-described “single uncle’s 80s basement” aesthetic,[8]playing punk rock and hip hop and sitting a short walk from Newport’s 1st Beach (Easton’s Beach). It welcomes walk-ins, hosts wedding welcome events, and offers beer to go — a loose, low-key contrast to the more polished stops earlier in the day.

Taproot Brewing Co.

Taproot operates directly inside Newport Vineyards, offering unfiltered, hop-forward small-batch beers[9] alongside farm-to-table dining overlooking the grapevines. There's an outdoor terrace, and dining overlooking the vines can require a reservation for larger groups — worth planning around if you want a sit-down meal to close out the weekend.

Planning Your Coastal Weekend

  • Start inland, end on the coast. Tilted Barn and Ragged Island work well as a Saturday-morning opener before the afternoon and evening shift toward Newport and Middletown.
  • Build in the Newport highlights. Ocean Drive, the Cliff Walk, and Brenton Point State Park all sit close to Newport Craft — an easy way to break up drinking with a walk along the water.
  • Save Bowen’s Wharf for dinner.A seafood dinner at Bowen’s Wharf is a natural way to close out a day that started on a farm.
  • Reserve ahead for Taproot. Vineyard-view dining can require booking ahead, especially for larger groups, so plan that piece of the day before you leave home.
  • Check the to-go limit. Rhode Island law caps off-premise brewery sales at forty-eight 16-ounce cans (768 ounces) per visitor, per day (R.I. Gen. Laws § 3-6-1),[10] if you're planning to bring beer home from any of these stops.

Frequently asked questions

How many breweries are on this Newport-area weekend route?

Five, across four towns: Tilted Barn in Exeter, Ragged Island in Portsmouth, Newport Craft in Newport, and Rejects Beer Co. and Taproot Brewing Co. in Middletown. The route runs from inland Exeter out to the Newport coast.

Do I need a car for this itinerary?

Yes. The stops are spread across Exeter, Portsmouth, Newport, and Middletown, so this is a driving route rather than a walkable one — budget a full weekend and build in Ocean Drive, the Cliff Walk, and a seafood dinner at Bowen’s Wharf between breweries.

How much beer can I take home from Rhode Island breweries?

Rhode Island law caps off-premise brewery sales at forty-eight 16-ounce cans (768 ounces) per visitor, per day (R.I. Gen. Laws § 3-6-1).[10] Keep that in mind if you plan to bring beer home from any of these stops.

Which stops need reservations?

Taproot Brewing Co. is the main one to plan ahead for — farm-to-table dining overlooking the Newport Vineyards grapevines can require a reservation for larger groups. The other stops welcome walk-ins, though weekends around Newport get busy.
